Partisan gerrymandering serves to predetermine the outcomes of our elections, robbing voters of a truly representative government. That is why the League of Women Voters of Illinois is endorsing the latest effort by Fair Maps Illinois (fairmapsillinois.org) to amend the state Constitution and move Illinois a step closer to legislative districts that accurately reflect our voting population.

At this LWVPA event, Donna Limper, LWV Roselle/Bloomingdale Issues and Advocacy Director, will explain how gerrymandering works, why voting in primaries matters, and how Illinois voters can take action through the Fair Maps Illinois reform effort in advance of the 2030 Census.

Join us for a meal or a cup of coffee and a conversation about how you can contribute to the movement by collecting signatures on a petition to amend the Illinois Constitution and promote fair drawing of voting districts.

If you cannot attend the event, please refer to the LWVIL article below. Chris Jessee has agreed to collect notarized petitions by April 15. Contact her at president@lwvpalatinearea.org. .

Alternatively, as noted in the LWVIL article below, you may mail notarized petitions directly to the LWVIL office in Chicago. Please read all instructions carefully.

Illinois Deserves Fair Maps

Partisan gerrymandering serves to predetermine the outcome of our elections, robbing voters of a truly representative government. That is why the League of Women Voters of Illinois is advocating to amend the Illinois Constitution and move Illinois a step closer to having legislative districts that reflect our voting population in time for decennial redistricting in 2030

The 2026 Redistricting Amendment would amend Article IV of the Illinois Constitution to change the procedure by which the General Assembly  will draw Legislative District maps following the decennial census in 2030 by constituting a Legislative Redistricting Commission that will draw Legislative and Representative District maps using rational, neutral criteria

This amendment impacts the Illinois state districts, it would not change the federal districts.

The LWVIL is embarking on a campaign to gather petitions in support of this amendment. In order to get on the ballot in Illinois, we must get at least 350,000 signatures. Our goal is 600,000 statewide.

You can help us collect signatures! Print petition sheets and gather signatures from friends and family, door-to-door in your neighborhood, or circulate and table at events where a large number of voters are gathered together, such as county fairs, picnics, school board meetings, high school sports games, and concerts.

Learn more about the redistricting amendment and get instructions for circulating petitions on our website or watch the info session recorded on November 18.
