Pillars of Democracy: Unite and Rise
From April 16 to April 29, the Schaumburg Library is exhibiting Pillars of Democracy: Unite and Rise, a powerful traveling exhibition by acclaimed artist Niki Johnson, presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Illinois Education Fund, which our dues and donations support.
The exhibit features four large-scale collaged portraits that reimagine Lady Liberty, Justice, Freedom, and Forward Progress as first-time voters. Through these striking works, Johnson explores how democratic values are expressed, challenged, and renewed at the local level.
To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, join with your LWVPA friends on Thursday, April 16, for a specially planned evening.
The LWVPA is sponsoring a 3 prong event:
- Dinner Gathering
Location: El Mero Mero 34 W. Schaumburg Rd. Schaumburg, IL
Time: 4:00 PM- 5:45 PM
Cost: Separate Checks
Members are invited to join us at 4:00 PM for an optional dinner at El Mero Mero before the workshop. It is our League’s goal to support small, family run restaurants in the communities we serve. Note: Reservations will close by Wednesday, April 15 at 9:00 AM. Separate registration is required for dinner. Click HERE to reserve a seat.

Location: Schaumburg Library, 130 S Roselle Rd, Schaumburg, IL 60193, 2nd Floor Rasmussen Room
Time: 6:30PM - 8:00 PM
Cost: Free Event
After viewing the exhibit, we will attend the Artist Talk and Workshop from 6:30–8:00 p.m. in the Rasmussen Room. Niki Johnson will discuss her artistic process and the inspiration behind Pillars of Democracy: Unite & Rise, followed by a guided conversation and hands-on writing activity that encourages participants to reflect on democracy, equity, and civic participation.

This event is a chance to connect with fellow League members at dinner before attending the artist presentation. We hope you’ll join us for this thoughtful evening of art, discussion, and community reflection.
