Voting Rights: Bringing History Up to Date With a Focus on Illinois

7:00 PM

Hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area and
The Schaumburg - Hoffman Estates Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated

Open to the Public
Presented on Zoom

Join Ami Gandhi and Clifford Helm, of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights,
to learn more about our voting rights—how we got to where we are today and how we in Illinois can take action to secure our right to vote.

The struggle for voting rights in this country has been uneven since the 1950s. We've experienced a national expansion through the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and its renewals—only to have a key provision of that Act gutted by a 2013 Supreme Court decision. In Illinois we've experienced an expansion of early and mail voting opportunities—while at the same time other states have taken steps to suppress the vote by creating obstacles and restricting those same opportunities.

How have voting rights expanded and narrowed over the last 60+ years? Where do those rights stand today? And what are some options for action both in Illinois and nationally?

For nearly 100 years, the League of Women Voters has fought to protect the rights of eligible voters and expand access for those who've been left out of our democratic process. The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public. The League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area services communities located throughout the Northwest Suburbs.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black Community.  The Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Alumnae Chapter (SHAC) was chartered in 1991 and serves the communities in and around the Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates area, including Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, Palatine, Roselle, Streamwood, and other neighboring communities.
The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development. International Awareness and Involvement. Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement
